His "real" job (other than as an antique dealer) was in sales. He regularly chewed Wrigleys Spearmint Gum to keep his breath fresh when he went on sales calls...or so I thought. It was the ONLY kind of gum he ever bought. I grew to HATE the stuff...especially when Bubblicious made its entre' to the gum chewing scene...so many new flavors and all Dad would ever buy was Wrigleys. Spearmint.

One day, he was down in our basement, working to repair a "gloppy" gold antique picture frame for a customer. The plaster work that made up the flourishes, beading and shells on the frame was chipped and broken in several places. I sat down on the stairs to watch Dad work. He handed me a piece of the dreaded Wrigleys and asked me if I'd chew a piece for him... "Ugh, Dad, I can't stand this stuff...I don't know how you can only chew this one flavor." He said, "It's simple...you see these broken areas on this picture frame?" I nodded. "The best way to repair them is with Wrigleys. He popped a well chewed piece out of his mouth, applied it to the wooden surface of the frame and "sculpted" it into a perfect match for the missing plaster design. He explained that Wrigleys Spearmint is the only thing he could find that he could easily manipulate, it dried rock hard without shrinking...it could be sanded and filed...and it would easily accept paint or gold-leafing without flaking or chipping. Together, we started chewing and sculpting... Within a few short hours and with very tired jaws, "we" had the frame completely repaired and set aside to dry.

They say "Necessity is the Mother of Invention." I've never heard about anyone else using this method, but it couldn't have been our secret alone...or at least it isn't any more...

Wonderful post, as always... Her husband (now deceased) was a head and neck surgeon and big baseball supporter. He told the guys they should chew gum not tobacco. Tobacco giving them a better than average chance for cancer. So, bubble gum it is -- even for the big league games!Snaphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16648866385164116020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688209043302840072.post-58055478245828188612009-07-29T08:25:41.240-05:002009-07-29T08:25:41.240-05:00Just amazing what artists use for a medium!!
