Just a Compliment

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
Leo F. Bascaglia

Ahh..the simple compliment. Face it, we all like to get a compliment. No matter if we're insecure or shy, it makes us feel good inside and we smile. I know it does for me but the whole key is a sincere compliment...one that is honest. If I give a compliment, it's because I mean what I say and don't flippantly throw them out there for acceptance. We all know the compliments that weren't given in truth and we begin to second guess the person giving the praise.

My DH has taken on being a chef at the college here...something he isn't trained for (he's a graphic artist and fashion photographer) but they were in dire need after the head chef left. He's always had a love of cooking and has quite the reknowned reputation. He came home yesterday flying on cloud nine. They needed some kind of soup for the day so he set out to make his beef stew...original, from scratch and not from a can. Several of the students going through the line made the comment, "I was told to have the beef stew..it's fabulous!" A simple affirmation, honest, and turned his whole world around.

It's really not difficult to do and once you do start, you will see a difference in people and they're response back to you. Who knows, you may compliment someone, start a conversation and become friends!

I don't believe in giving a compliment unless I mean it. I mean them all the time.

Love Renee xoxo

That is so accurate! A compliment like that can really make your day. And I know what you mean. I never try to give a compliment just to give one...

I watch my little grandson blooming with his mommy's love and hugs and the little beaming light that comes from him when he accomplishes something and she acknowledges it. I think compliments, when sincere, are like little hugs and we still crave and need that as adults. Great post, and congrats to your Hubby for risking a move outside his comfort zone! You never know what can happen!

So true, such a simple thing to do too. I think you are right though, you have to be sincere or it lacks impact. I love that your dh is cooking, while not formally trained to do so. Would he share his recipe with us? I was craving beef stew the other day and know the fixings are going on the grocery list for next week :) Thank you, I really enjoyed this post :)
I too am one that will not give a compliment unless I truly mean it and it comes from the heart!! I think thats so awesome about the compliments your hubby got...that had to boost his confidence and though it might not be what he is used to doing..it might end up being just another thing he is really good at...and the day he had yesterday sure will give him that boost!!
i saw the smile and heard the story...it made me smile too just because its my dad and i love him:)

Isn't that cute about your husband and the students? I love that! I'm glad that he had a good day - and may I say, "Gee, you look lovely today?" :)
Bravo to your gutsy husband!! Did he bring any home for supper?

Such an important post Alicia. We all need to feel we matter, we count, we're noticed and especially that we are appreciated.

I appreciate you. :)

Hi Alicia

thanks for the reminder of the power of a kind word...

Happy days
A kind statement or compliment can improve one's day/week/month/year/life. It's so nice when people say the nice things that they think. Thanks for the reminder! Congrats to your husband on his new venture!

Amazing, isn't it. How little effort it takes to say something positive and how much it can change a person's day. I think this is a great thing for your DH.
Well said and so true! There is nothing better than a genuine compliment or smile to brighten one's day. Also, I really enjoyed the story about your husband's 'new career' - good for him!
So so true, and what an important reminder. A compliment is NEVER wasted. I've been amazed at what a difference it can make to compliment someone in your everyday activities like cashiers, tellers, waiters, etc. Sadly, they hear complaints more often, so that compliment means even more.

I also wanted to give you a heads up that I'm running a giveaway contest on my blog right now. Stop on over if you'd like to enter to win one of my handmade marbled journals! http://PersistentGreen.blogspot.com

Congrats to your husband. Have a wonderful day!
A very good reminder.....
The more compliments you give the more you receive and it becomes a natural part of your day!
Here is yours today: You are one of the nicest bloggers out there. You are great!

Good thoughts! It's hard to stop thinking about my own stuff at times and really look at others. Compliments are usually easy to find when I am actually looking at them.... :O)

How awesome to be married to someone who is such a good cook! Lucky you.
And you are completely right. A lot of the reason we all blog :)
Thank you for coming to my blog and your kind comments.
I love how a man's face lights up when he receives a compliment. We all need affirmation, but something about receiving it makes a man's day... lovable little boys in big boy suits.

A chef in the family, how nice! :-)
Very well said...and above all "honest"! love ya....xo...deb

Compliments are wonderful things to get when you know the giver really means it. And they don't cost anything to give, but the rewards to the receiver can have more meaning than you can ever know. A compliment can even change the direction of a life. Pretty powerful stuff.
