People Watching

We just returned from a several hour jaunt (3 hours drive) to the Social Security Office. Seems they have the wrong birth date for my DH..however that happened is another story. While there, I practiced one of my favorite things to do.

I'm a people watcher.

I must have inherited this pastime from my father. He was born and raised in ND so while visiting us when we lived in Miami Beach, it was pretty easy to find entertainment. He would sit in the gardens of the Bal Harbour Shops and for hours, watch the people walking by with their busy schedules. It fascinated him to no end watching the way they stood, walked, interacted when no one was looking. What about the way they talk? Were they happy, nervous? It was a great way for him to pass the time.

I realized today while waiting at the SS office, I was doing the same thing. Just watching how people interacted...not voyeurism mind you..but in a curiosity way. I guess "people watching" could be called every day reality TV...but the catch is...this is real and not staged to garner a viewing audience. I would much rather sit on a park bench watching people than tune in to a TV show where the participants are bought and paid for. Do you people watch? Do you watch reality TV?

I totally love to people watch, especially at airports. I wonder about their lives and loves. Where are they flying to? Are they going to meet someone they haven't seen awhile, on and on. What would it be like to live in their shoes for a day.
It reminds me that there is a great big world out there. People everywhere living their lives.

Hello Alicia, I love to people watch, but I can't stand reality TV, because they know they are being watched! Infuriates me! hope you are well!

I love to people watch. Airports are amazing for this! Sometimes I even get ideas on clothing items to wear. :) Fun post!
Hi, Alicia! I love people watching, especially at airports--so much emotion (anticipation, frustration, happiness). I do occasionally watch reality TV, but I do wonder how much of it is actually scripted... hmmm.. much better to watch real people, in real life. :)
I am a total people watcher and . . . (embarrassed) listener, too. If I am in a restaurant and a conversation grabs my attention in the next booth, I'll shush my hubby to get the end of the story. But, it's really fascinating. Of course, I am not sure I would want to be watched! :)

I'm a big time people watcher. They are amazing (especially when they think no one is watching). I don't watch reality TV ... it's not real! And, I don't watch a lot of TV anyway ... mostly sports. Now ... baseball and the Tour de France.

Hugs--

PS .. Hope he got his birthday fixed. It can cause such problems.

Reality tv? Nope. Unless you count Dancing With The Stars (I tell myself that's a competition).

When Handsome & I people watch, we try to figure out what they do from their dress, mannerisms & physical appearance... high school math teacher, the guy who makes keys at Ace Hardware, a clerk at Whole Foods, a retired engineer, a gambler, etc. Exotic dancers are pretty easy to spot ;-)

Oh my god that is too funny. You asking about people watching reality shows. I am one of those peeps! Tonight as a matter of fact is the premiere of Big Brother Season 11. I have watched all the years previous! I LOVE it. Don't ask my why I just do! I have now found out that my nephew and his wife down the road from us love it too. We are going there tonight as Linda is putting on a Big Brother party. We are having snacks and beers instead of supper. We will then put the name of the contestants in a hat and draw names. We will bet money etc. and at the end of the season which is in October the winner gets all. I will surely post a blog about our Big Brother addiction! Crazy I know.

I'm with you, I love to just watch people. As for reality tv, the only reality show that I really like is Project Runway. And I don't watch it for the drama, I just like to see how people approach challenges.
A lot of what goes on in reality tv is staged anyways... I think some people would be surprised at how a story can change with 'editing' and all that!

My DH & I loooove to people watch...and while airports are primo spots, it even gets more interesting if you're at a common location...like WALMART. Usually when I'm shopping, my DH will plop down on the "Liar's Bench" to wait & gossip with other DHs. When I "finally" get finished, I'll usually plop down next to him for a rousing game of "Will that Child get a Beating?" or "Real or Real Bought?" We also play "Guess the Gender," "Spot the Dirty Old Man" and "Did You Even Look at Yourself in a Mirror Before You Went Out???" It's all in good fun and we don't allow anyone to overhear us... We don't travel as much as we used to and don't see the inside of many airports anymore...so you just make do with what you have available...

Great post!
Hugs!

Alicia, sometime I think that we live parallel lives! I also love to people watch. When I am unhurried, I like to ponder what their profession is, why they are at that location, who they are chatting with. I love it!

I love watching people they are interesting, funny the make me smile and the make me feel normal.

I have also been known to watch reality tv but I do believe people act up for the camera's. Not a huge fan of BB but totally loving the Australian Master Chef series even though one of the judges is a spitting image of my Ex husband, even his mannerisms are the same. It's too freaky yet I continue to tune in.

American Idol...but not reality shows per se...

People are fascinating...and like another commenter said, I love to hear the conversations...but I don't zone in on one, I like to let my ears go fuzzy and just hear the drone of all the conversations going on at once.

So many of us, and not a duplicate in the bunch. Now, any day you are in need of a miracle??? That's a miracle!

I don't people watch. I don't watch t.v. I think I am missing out! :)
My dad is the people-watcher in our family. It is funny to see him. My parents will go into a store (Wal-Mart usually). Mom will drop dad off at the front of the store - and he'll sit on a bench. Mom will do the shopping. He just watches everyone.
That would bore me to tears!

I watch people to the extend they think I'm creepy! I can't help it. I was out to breakfast yesterday and there was a woman with such a lovely, interesting face. I kept looking at her because she was compelling. I think she thought I was nosey or crazy. I still watched her beautiful face. Probably too much info, but I do watch people. And they surely watch me, I think warily!
