Weekend Warrior

I'm a weekend warrior.

Definition...People who do recreational activities (such as golfing, skiing, snowboarding, or mountain biking) solely on the weekends since they work Monday through Friday.

Let's throw in badminton to that list. Oh...that's that fluffy game where you take little racquets and try to hit a birdie over the net. All you have to do is stand and lightly swing the racquet, get the shuttlecock over the net and the game goes on. Not too strenuous.

Wrong. We're serious here....even have our own weighted raquets. Part of our backyard, come spring, turns into a badminton court and let me tell you...we PLAY the game. None of this standing around...you're diving, stretching to get an overhead shot or smash, bending to pick up shuttlecocks...super fast paced. People coming into our yard to watch give that "OMG...I had no idea look" and can't wait to play.

So this weekend was the first weekend with no wind, sunny and perfect for playing.

Start time...10AM. End time...9pm.

I am so needing this today.

Wow. I guess you are serious. Weighted raquets? Eleven HOURS?! I've always sucked at that game.

A massage sounds FANTASTIC. I feel like I slept while doing a headstand last night.

What fun!!! Badminton was a favorite game of my childhood...when energy was boundless (see Zach's black Lab puppy below) and an "overhead smash" generally involved hitting someone taller than you over the head with your racket. Back then, muscle aches were something that actually surprised you rather than appeared as the expected result of the slightest amount of physical exertion.

Another favorite was Volleyball, as we were able to "dual duty" the badminton net. A couple of weekends ago, my husband and I engaged our 13 year old in a friendly volleyball game. About 30 minutes into it, our "over 40" eyes locked in what my daughter calls "mysterious parental communication" that said, "You get the ibuprofen, I'll get the Ben Gay & I'll meet you at the emergency room for traction." At least she found our efforts entertaining, which was our original intent anyway...mission accomplished!

How fun! Oh, I remember the days of playing raquetball, that was such a great workout.
I took my over 40 body for a strenuous walk on Friday (after not having worked out for quite a while) and promptly got sick. Sore throat, burning nose, aching body....so sad. I gotta remember to start off with a light walk, blah.

I love badmitton! We always play in the summertime. As kids, my sister & I would stay out until it got dark hitting that birdie. then it was lightening bugs after that :-)

I love badminton. It is such a nice game to play. The easier version of tennis.

Is it really called a shuttlecock? I thought it was a birdie! LOL Have I been calling it a birdie in front of people when it is not a birdie? Hell, I am such a dope!

A game of badminton followed by glass of ice tea could be just what I need to unwind. It sounds like you have some fun playing.

I love badminton! You're so correct, people don't realize that it is such a great workout. I live in such a hilly area and unfortunately our houses never have a lots flat enough for a court. I also miss croquet. Someday I will have my lawn games, someday...
