Bummed...Any Suggestions?

I'm listening for any suggestions here. While shooting my jewelry yesterday, my camera went poof! Totally frustrating. I use a Nikon D50 and have had it for years...always have been a Nikon fan. Fortunately, when I got the camera, the salesman talked me into a service plan...which I never take. He was pretty adamant that I purchase it and I am certainly glad I did. I have had to send this in 4 times...this being the fifth time...for various reasons. It always takes a month to get back so I have another one that is my reserve. Just not the same as the original with all the bells and whistles plus the close-up does not work as well on the reserve one. Sooo...the long and short of it is that I am hunting for a new camera. Anybody have any ideas out there that can handle tons of pics, great close-ups and last longer than a year ?

On a lighter note, I found out about a cool giveaway (don't we all like to participate in those!) reading the blog Fluff and Finery by Frippery. Love her masthead...that's me years ago..joking of course. Tristan over at Enchanted Rivalry is having a Tussie Mussie giveaway for reaching 50 blog readers. Check out those cute pixies in his masthead! Cute and fun...just what I am up for today!

That Is adorable. Thanks so much for sharing the giveaway..Kathi
I have a Canon PowerShot S2IS and I love it. This is of course the OLD model...they now have an S5 or S6 out.
I've also heard tons of good things about the Canon Digital Rebel.
Good luck on finding a new one :)

Bummer!!! I just bought a Canon SX10IS! I loooove it - put some closeups on my blog if you want to look - you may have to look back a little bit - February posts. Very easy to use, lots of great features. Good luck!!! Sarah

I just got a Nikon D60 but still don't know how to use it. I go back to my trusy Canon Power Shot SD500 every time. Of course, I love Picasa for quick fixes.

Alicia, Since you already take way better pictures than I do, I'm not worried about giving away any state secrets. :-) I LOVE my Panasonic DMC FZ50. It is very easy to use, once you read the manual at least one time through and it takes wonderful pics. Great closeups when you don't wiggle like I do and just a joy. I used to have the Nikon you just lost and I traded it in for the Panasonic, that's how much I like it.
Awww....bummer about your camera. No advice, sorry. I use a clunky old Canon. I'm lucky I have digital.

I use to have a D50 as well and I hated it. I now use a Canon Rebel and it is awesome! I've never had a problem with it and it's super easy to use.

That's so cute. Thanks for the tip on the giveaway!
I have a Luminex 18x camera, digital with a Leica lens which is an excellent lense. I love it and I bought it at Costco. It wasn't too expensive, I think 299...something like that. My son has a cheaper version and it has lasted him for years, never breaks, and takes great pictures.
Good luck with your search :)

you've probably solved this issue already, but i had to put in my two cents...i have had a Nikon D60 for close to a year now and have never had a single problem with it, not even after i once dropped it on a hard tile floor (smashed the UV protector on my lens, but that was it). i did just get a D300, but that was just good fortune, not because i didn't love the D60. it sounds like you just had bad luck with your D50, but i would seriously not hold that against nikon. nikon rocks.
I have a Canon Rebel XT and I love it. I'm still acquiring lenses for it. It takes great photos. I would suggest reading the owners manual at least once....
I'm still learning and I've had it for over a year!
I have the newest Canon Rebel and love it.. also have the Canon SD450 which I have had for 3 or 4 years and love it too. Guess I'm a Canon Girl.. my sister swears by Nikon and uses their D90.

New camera? Nikon is the god of cameras, at least in my opinion, though I did hold a vintage Leica in my hands once. It rocked.

Unfortunately, cameras are made cheaply now. I have been shooting with Nikons since 1985, when they were real metal. I carried them to several Third World countries, exposed them to extreme heat and cold, dropped them on sidewalks where they bounced a few times, and didn't worry too much if they got rained on a little. My gear was dusty, dirty, beat and banged up but it never missed a beat.

I have to be much more careful with these newer cameras.

If you do a lot of shooting go for the D700. It should be coming down in price soon. You can shoot at 6400 with very little noise.
